But if we absolutely must have this kind of topical, morbid media — and it does indeed seem like we must — then I’m glad it’s as good as To the Lake, Netflix’s new eight-episode original series which is a gorgeous, horrifying, and compelling account of contemporary society in a hastening collapse. The film's spooky elements, ramped up from both the novel and the Hitchcock adaptation, become a Trojan horse for the chilling reality of heterosexual marriage in the hyper-stratified world of early 20th century England. In Rebecca's case, the real horror is that marriage is sold to women as an aspiration when it's actually more of a necessary evil, and the story unfolds with the sinister repercussions of the narrator's irrevocable choices. 4. Perhaps it's the ghoulish head housekeeper Mrs. Danvers (played here by a shade-throwing Kristin Scott Thomas) who makes the nameless protagonist's married life hell. Schadenfreude personified -- monsterified. Wheatley's adaptation takes pains to make the narrator's struggles more legible to a 21st century audience, doubling down on the inescapable dread of scarcity -- that because there's only one Maxim de Winter, there can only be one Mrs. de Winter. Mrs. Danvers, whose machinations in the novel target the narrator directly, does one better in the film, instead tricking other women into doing her dirty work. A large cast of characters, all with distinct personalities and relationships, is introduced economically and then gradually brought together as the threat of a mysterious, aggressive epidemic is unveiled through news broadcasts, online videos, and terrifying scenes of carnage. Or perhaps Lily James' unnamed narrator and protagonist, known only as "the second Mrs. de Winter," isn't as virtuous as she seems. Now might not be the right time for a show like To the Lake, but if we have to have morbid topical media — and it seems we do — then I’m happy for it to be as good as this.
