The picture doesn’t quite end on the right note, concluding its story without really giving its protagonist much of an arc, but getting there is plenty entertaining and the story offers a few swerves. There is an element of melodrama and absurdity of course, contriving subway-train sequences isn’t exactly novel and I’d like to have seen more dialogue scenes between Boseman and Simmons, and Boseman and Miller. Unnecessary gore and imaginative injuries are included as though someone has enjoyed coming up with them, in the horror movie manner, and *SPOILER* the majority of characters have been killed by the end *END SPOILER*. When the search intensifies, authorities decide to take extreme measures by closing all of Manhattan's 21 bridges to prevent the suspects from escaping. The action never feels implausible, and even the means in which the bad guys are tracked seems true-to-life. I have extensively written about all. Without aggressively sympathizing with the thieves, who began their night by gunning down nine people, the film allows us to see their surprise, desperation and panic as what was supposed to be a simple robbery turns them into the most wanted men in the city. There’s always a question as to whether bad policework or seemingly iffy shootings are a cover-up or merely a symptom of overly-aggressive and hair-trigger policing. And there’s a blink-and-you-miss-it moment where Boseman is chasing a suspect and realizes that he essentially looks like (and is dressed like) the culprit and thus must worry about getting shot by his colleagues.
