It’s not long before the meek Arthur gets the distinct feeling that things aren’t quite right in Paris, and is particularly unnerved by the gang of young men that hoon about menacingly in their hotted-up, spray-painted jalopies (made from bits of previous victims’ cars). The tone is beautifully sustained throughout, hovering just on the right side of conviction, with superbly understated comic performances from Camilleri and Meillon (the latter as a cosmically impotent mayor). Already here there are traces of the mythic glamour underlying Picnic At Hanging Rock, and of the furious energy to be found in Master And Commander: The Far Side Of The World. | Rating: 4/5 For most of the film he wisely offers only hints of the monstrous nature lurking within the town’s ill-gotten vehicles, before finally letting loose with a bloody climax full of automotive carnage – including a particularly memorable, echidna-like metal-spiked VW Beetle. All in all, he receives a warm welcome, quickly coming to feel that he belongs there, yet he can't shift the feeling that something is amiss.

The music in this film really stood out and definitely is worth listening while laughing your way through this cheesy, evil car film. It's a charming little horror debut from Peter Weir that sits somewhere between Clockwork Orange and The Wicker Man.
