This past Mother's Day, Kamala spoke about her late mother, Shyamala Gopalan, who passed away in 2009: I’m the daughter of a mother who broke down all kinds of barriers.
"Their activism and what they were striving to achieve was what we talked about at the dinner table,” says Harris. She is the daughter of Shyamala Gopalan Harris (1938–2009), a breast cancer researcher who emigrated from Chennai (aka Madras), India in 1960; and Donald Harris, a Jamaican-born Stanford University economics professor, now emeritus.
She was a teen mom who had her daughter Meena when she was a senior in high school.
Husband From what we know about Donald Harris, their father, aside from one strangely critical comment he's made about Kamala, he doesn't speak to the press about the relationship, and neither Kamala nor Maya appear to talk about the relationship much. While she was there, she managed the successful campaign to defeat Proposition 54, a ballot initiative that would have prevented LGBTQ+ people from legally marrying in the state. She and the candidate were close during the process of building her policy plans for the hard-fought campaign, and fellow campaign staff said they would often be up late at night trading emails about the fine points of every position.
She taught us don’t let anyone tell you who you are. Missing her terribly, but know she and the ancestors are smiling today. Meena is the daughter of Maya and Tony West.
Perhaps no one knows Senator Harris better than her sister Maya. “We waited for the most inconvenient time to actually get together — he was in D.C. and I was in the Bay Area,” Harris recalls. Maya has been married for over two decades to Tony West, former Associate Attorney General of the U.S. Senate and current Chief Legal Officer of Uber: Twenty-One Years!
