VIS administrators will continue to meet and discuss the latest developments to determine when operations should resume. At Mile Marker 14 is the intersection for the new Daniel K. Inouye Highway (Hwy 200). The visitor center on Mauna Kea is about 9000 feet above the sea and is above the clouds with amazing views. Still, the visit to the top of Mauna Kea is worth it. ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️. Just before Mile Marker 28, look for a road to the right and a street sign that reads Maunakea Access Road. The visitors center was open but the gift shop was closed. Turn left onto the Maunakea Access Road. If you are a resident of another country or region, please select the appropriate version of Tripadvisor for your country or region in the drop-down menu. Exploring Hawaii’s Big Island can be a big undertaking, but it doesn’t have to be. Above the VIS, a 4-wheel drive vehicle is required. On the way down, there's a parking area to stargaze and take pictures of the milkyway. We appreciate the understanding of the public.
We’d been here once before but not as good as it was the first time. The station is about 6 miles up the road on the right side of the road. can change in an instant, and it can blizzard in the winter. Winds greater than 55 mph for more than 1 hour and/or gusts greater than 65mph. I was there 20 years ago, and the quality of what the center offers has declined. Still, the visit to the top of Mauna Kea is worth it. One of the women in my group did start feeling ill after a couple of hours at the summit. They did have a scope focused on the sun with filters but not much else.
We understand that the Visitor Information Center is helpful to those who visit Maunakea; however, we want to be prudent for the welfare of our visitors and our staff during this extraordinary time.

The snow is wind swept into interesting patterns (DON'T touch-not for snowballs).
