Sadly, despite a few potentially promising moments early on, the books was mostly quite dull, quite depressing and didn't really go anywhere. Part of the problem may be the pacing – Moggach builds her tale with painstaking slowness, wanting the non-literariness of the prose to reflect accurately her non-literary narrator. With the exception of Leila, sex on the show was used in a problematic way in these women’s narratives.

Moggach is too sophisticated of a writer to give her characters diagnoses, but one of the things I love about this book is how she makes Leila weird in ways that seem both quite believable and completely unique. . Here, though, one militates against the other so that Leila, while believable, is not intriguing enough in herself and the concept, intriguing though it is, is just not believable enough. To be honest, having Leila unlikeable would have made this book very interesting, BUT none of the other characters were likeable either. Whilst the main protagonist, Leila, is an engaging story teller, at times the narrative seemed to get nowhere too fast, and the final acts lack the dramatic denouement that would have given it 5 stars (in my view). The basic premise of this book - one woman is paid to impersonate another on the internet to hide the fact that the latter has killed herself - sounded unique and intriguing, if a little far-fetched.
