Hippo was probably first settled by Carthaginians in the 4th century bce. Hippo, also called Hippo Regius, ancient port on the coast of North Africa, located near the modern town of Annaba (formerly Bône) in Algeria. It later became the home of Numidian rulers.

From AD395-430, St. Augustine presided as bishop of Hippo. Once an important Roman city, the site of Hippo Regius lies in the outskirts of Annaba.

Unfortunately one of the more neglected sites in the country, it remains a must see for any traveler to Algeria.
